Connected Car Critical Dialogue: Overcoming the Distracted Driving Roadblock

One of the most critical issues confronting the growth and acceptance of the connected car is how to keep drivers from becoming distracted while providing the in-dash features and content they want – and keep them from turning to their handheld portable devices. We bring together three thought leaders from government, the auto industry and academia to discuss the issue in a rational but thought-provoking discussion.

Moderator: John Quain, The New York Times

David L. Strickland, Administrator, NHTSA

Mitch Bainwol, CEO, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers

Bruce Mehler, Research Scientist, MIT AgeLab and the New England University Transportation Center
Meeting Room 403 A&B
11:15 am - 12:00 pm
Panel Discussion: Is Big Data the Next Big Thing?

So far we’ve mostly seen data flowing to the car in the form of content from apps and telematics systems, but data flowing from the car is predicted to transform the automobile. As the car becomes increasingly connected, features ranging from vehicle-to-vehicle communication that can help prevent crashes to location-based services that can make drivers’ lives easier – and others we can’t yet imagine – will become commonplace. But issues such as security and privacy will need to be worked out before we can realize these benefits. This group of thought leaders will give as a peek at what’s in store for the Connected Car 2.0.

Nielsen will kick off this panel by presenting new proprietary research.
